The 2021 Emmy Nominations Move These Stars Closer To EGOT Status

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne could wind up as an EGOT winner this year if he wins at the upcoming Emmys. According to The A.V. Club, the HBO concert film, “David Byrne’s American Utopia,” directed by Spike Lee, was nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special (pre-recorded) category. Since the award would go to producers or executive producers, Byrne would technically win the Emmy since he is an executive producer on “American Utopia.” Byrne already has an Oscar and Grammy win for his “The Last Emperor” score, and per The New York Times, “American Utopia” also won a special Tony Award recently.

“American Utopia” faces stiff competition, especially from “Hamilton,” which has 12 Emmy nominations and a few stars also inching closer to EGOT status. According to Deadline, “Hamilton” stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, and Leslie Odom Jr. were all nominated for their roles in the musical. Goldsberry, Diggs, and Odom already have Tony and Grammy awards thanks to their work in “Hamilton,” and they only need an Oscar and Emmy win to join the EGOT club. Also, “WandaVision” songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez was nominated for an Emmy for the show’s title theme and the song “Agatha All Along.” Anderson-Lopez already has Oscar and Grammy wins for “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” leaving her an Emmy and Tony short of an EGOT.
